전치사 'as' + 명사

전치사 'as'는 사람 혹은 사물의 역할이나 목적의 의미로 사용된다. 'as' 뒤에는 명사가 나온다:

• I worked as a tutor when I was a student. Most of us did.
• The Sejong School appointed Sujin as its principal.
• An online class is seen as a cheaper alternative to a traditional class.
• English is used as a main tool to keep people connected to the world.

 

접속사 'as' + 절
접속사 'as'는 다양한 의미를 가지고 있다. 한 상황이 일어나고 있을 때 다른 상황이 일어나는 경우 접속사 'as'를 사용한다. 이런 경우에 흔히 'as' 뒤에 동사의 시제는 진행형으로 표현한다:

• My mom arrived as I was taking a shower.

어떤 결과의 이유 혹은 원인을 표현할 때 'as'를 사용한다:

• I left a message as you were out.

'in the way that + 절' 즉, '~대로' 의미로 사용된다:

• As the forecast predicted, the weather was perfect for the whole of the weekend.
• She got her assignment done early, as I expected.
• They did as I had asked.

동시에 일어나고 있는 상황을 표현할 때 'as'를 사용한다. 'as' 뒤에 나오는 절의 동사의 시제는 단순형을 흔히 사용한다. 주의할 점은 이러한 경우에 접속사 'when'을 사용하지 않는다: [~함에 따라]

• As the show increases in popularity, more and more tickets are sold daily.
• As she grows older, she gets weaker.
• As he has more friends, he spends more time hanging out with them.

 

The Same As

똑같은 두 대상을 비교할 때 'the same as'를 사용한다:

• We treat boys exactly the same as girls.
• She got the same job as the old one.
