접속사는 ‘and’, ‘or’, ‘but’, ‘then’ 그리고 ‘because’처럼 연결해주는 역할을 한다:

• They knocked all the houses and built a multi-level parking lot.
• Are there four or five people living in there?
• That house looks great but are not very comfortable.

 

등위 접속사 (and, but, either ... or, etc.)

등위접속사는 같은 문법 구조를 가진 표현들을 연결해 준다:

• Which do you prefer? Green or blue? [단어 - 단어]
• The lunch was very expensive and not very nice. [구 - 구]
• There are seats outside but many people don't like sitting outdoors. [절 - 절]
• My sister's name was Sujin. But she wanted to change her name. [문장 - 문장]

 

상관 접속사 

상관접속사는 2개의 부분으로 구성되어 있다: either ... or ..., neither ... nor ..., both ... and ...

• You can drink banana milk either hot in the winter or cold in the summer.
• Neither Sujin nor Sue had been to Thailand before. (They hadn't been to Thailand before.)
• Both you and I know what really happened yesterday. 

 

종속 접속사 (after, although, as soon as, etc.)

종속접속사는 절과 함께 사용되서 종속절이 된다. 종속절은 완전한 의미를 전달하지 못하기 때문에 단독으로 문장으로 사용할 수 없다. 다시 말해서 종속절이 완전한 문장을 구성하기 위해서는 다른 절이 필요하다. 종속절이 주절의 앞에 위치한 경우 대개 종속절의 끝에 쉼표를 사용한다. 종속절이 주절의 뒤에 위치한 경우 쉼표를 사용할 필요는 없다:

 

1개 단어로 구성된 종속접속사

• After they had talked on the phone, I wrote down what they had decided. [종속절, 주절]
• Everone enjoyed the fishing trip although no one did catch any fish! [주절 종속절]
• Before we left at 2 o'clock, we had something to do. [종속절, 주절]

 

2개 단어 이상으로 구성된 종속접속사 (as long as, as soon as, except that, in order that, provided that)

• As long as you love me, I do not care whatever you do.
• Provided that payment is made within 30 days of receipt of shipment, we would like to offer a 10% discount. 

 

부사의 수식을 받는 종속접속사 (just when, ever since, only if, just as, simply because, right before)

• The phone rang just when I'd finished my work. 
• I have been afraid of swimming in the sea ever since I was a kid.
