간접 의문문이란?

간접 의문문은 상대방에게 질문 혹은 부탁을 하는 경우 직접 의문문에 비해서 더 공손한 표현이다. 그래서 낯선 사람이나 잘 알지 못하는 사람에게 질문을 하는 경우 자주 사용한다. 간접 의문문은 대개 조동사(can, could, and would)와 함께 자주 사용된다:

• Can / Could you tell me where Tonsak Market is?
• Would you mind if I sit down next to you?
• Do you know why she always wears a mask?
• Do you have any idea what it means to be rich?
• Would it be possible for you to help me with my project?
• Is there any chance you could join us for something important?

 

의문사를 포함하는 간접 의문문 형태

'Where is Tonsak Market?'은 직접 의문문이다. 단어의 순서가 '의문사 + 동사 + 주어' 순이다. 하지만, 간접 의문문은 다른 형태의 구조를 갖는다. 예를 들어, 간접 의문문 'Do you know why she always wears a mask?'에서 'why she always wears a mask' 부분은 문장의 일부분으로 명사처럼 동사의 목적어로 사용되고 있다. 해당 부분의 단어 순서는 평서문처럼 '의문사 + 주어 + 동사' 순이다:

• Do you know why she always wears a mask?

 

의문사를 포함하지 않는 간접 의문문 형태 

'Has she done it yet?' 문장은 'wh-의문사'를 포함하고 있지 않다. 이러한 문장은 간접 의문문의 일부분으로 사용될 때 'if / whether + 절' 형태를 갖는다. 'Do you know if / whether she has done it yet?' 문장에서 'if / whether she has done it yet' 부분은 평서문처럼 단어 순서가 'if / whether + 주어 + 동사' 순이다:

• Do you know if / whether she has done it yet?

 

호의를 부탁할 때

친구나 다른 사람에게 어려운 부탁을 할 때도 간접 의문문은 유용한 표현이다. 직접적으로 부탁할 때 보다 간접 의문문을 활용한 표현은 상대방에게 어려운 부탁임을 인지시키고 훨씬 더 공손하게 들린다:

• Can you please help me with my project on Friday?
• Would it be possible for you to help me with my project?
• Is there any chance you could help me with my project?
• I was wondering if you could help me with my project.
