Get out of an English classroom

It doesn’t literally mean that you should stop learning English at school. It is still helpful. When I lived abroad, I met so many people and asked them if they knew any hacks to learn English quickly. The thing is, English is just one of those languages out there in the world.

It is not a subject you are supposed to learn at school. It, if anything, is a language you should pick up by putting it into practice everyday. It doesn’t matter whether or not you live in an English speaking country. Thanks to the internet, you are now living in the world where you can expose yourself to English context all day long 24/7

Do not ever try to be a native speaker

You don’t have to sound like a native speaker. I have seen quite a few Koreans try to take their English communication skills to the next level till they feel like they are natives. They seemed to be obsessed with perfectionism. I want to call it language perfectionism.

I don’t believe we could be like someone who was born in the United States. My English fluency is not as perfect. Nobody would blame you for the fact that you don’t sound like Americans. You might lose a large amount of time you would otherwise spend doing something more useful for your life.

Do not compare your English skill to others' one

Many English learners are comparing themselves to native English speakers or other learners who have reached fluency. If you observe that your English is not as good, you start to feel inferior. Do not compare your English skills to others. I don’t mean it in a way that you’d have to ignore English spoken by people around you.

It’s quite the opposite. I want you to perceive this piece of advice as an encouragement not to feel inferior to other English speakers. Personally I get this feeling constantly, but I honestly don’t care about it anymore. Well, it’s not that my attitude is completely ignorant and I don’t care about what others say. Simply DON’T CARE! I can tell you honestly your English is probably better than you imagine.

Fun to be around

Getting better at any language requires a massive amount of repetition. You need to train your brain to produce words and grammar automatically and correctly. This repetition can be boring. To top it all, a majority of Koreans see English as math problem solving. What gets tested gets done, and communicative speaking ability is not tested. Thus - surprise! - there is little communicative abilities. English is pretty much like something dull after all.

It doesn’t have to be, though. English must be fun to be around. Having fun has such a lot of benefits. Not only are you super excited about English but you also keep doing something with English everyday, which definitely helps you improve your English proficiency. What makes English interesting depends on your preference. For example, if you are a huge fan of Youtube, Search for anything you are interested in on YouTube. There is so much there in short video clips that you may never need to watch TV again.

YouTube is perfect for a quick daily dose of English Language. Subscribing to channels that feature clips on topics you might be interested in, such as Business news, sport, fashion, etc is a great idea. Alternatively you may want to watch your favorite TV series or film in English. Every time you log in to your own account, YouTube will present you with a number of videos that meet your interests.

Let your mouth befriend you

You try to make sure that you surround yourself with English context. Luckily enough, you can practice English either offline or online no matter where you are. If you are with English speaking partners, try to talk with them on any issues you find easy and comfortable, which would help you keep talking in English.

Likewise, you could also practice English by describing whatever happens to you with your smartphone unless there is no one you talk to in English. You can take your English skills to another level with your smartphone by describing how you feel, what you do, and what you experience every day. You guys probably live in a country where English is not your mother tongue.

One of the easiest steps to English fluency is to actually keep your mouth working constantly. You should say anything around you in English. If you don’t know how to say it correctly, go to your smartphone and use it as your English tutor. By doing so, you can make it a rule to speak English 24/7 unless you live in an English speaking country.

Learning another language is equivalent to a long journey. It takes you a long while to feel as if English is like your first language. Be patient and keep practicing English day in and day out.
